Selenium has many functions in the body but of most interest to horse owners is it's anti-oxidant role in helping prevent hydrogen and lipid peroxide (oxygen metabolites) build up and damage to the cells. Selenium in the enzyme glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) is the first line of defence in destroying peroxides before they become damaging free radicals. The most obvious symptom associated with low selenium levels is poor performance which, if not noticed early and treated can progress to the clinical syndrome known as tying-up.
